Winchester Green Badge Guides host The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Winchester

PRESS RELEASE – Winchester Area Tourist Guides Association
4 August 2026
The Winchester Tourist Guides have been delighted to host The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Jamie Scott and the Mayoress Mrs Wendy Scott on two tours of the city at the end of July.
The Mayor and Mayoress joined Winchester Green Badge Guide Judith Hoskins for the afternoon tour of Lower Winchester. This route takes in the picturesque riverside, the historic ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the highlights of College Street including Winchester College and No. 8 where Jane Austen died. The tour concludes near the Cathedral.
The following morning the Mayor and Mayoress were taken on a tour of the Upper City with newly qualified Green Badge Guide Liz Case. The Upper City route passes the Cathedral and goes through The Square to the High Street. From there it progresses to the Westgate, Great Hall and finishes in the beautiful Peninsula Square. Liz, along with 13 other new Green Badge Guides, received her Green Badge, as well as the coveted Winchester City Guide badge, from the Mayor in June upon successful completion of the Institute of Tourist Guiding’s rigorous syllabus and exams.
The Winchester Tourist Guides run a full programme of regular and themed walking tours with something to interest the first time visitor, returning visitor or long term Winchester resident, such as the forthcoming Winchester for Locals tour on Saturday 8th August at 11.30am.
Cllr Jamie Scott, Mayor of Winchester, said: “I’d highly recommend the Winchester Tourist Guides. I’ve lived in Winchester all my life, but I learned so much and it reaffirmed my appreciation for the history and architecture of our wonderful city centre.
“I’d like to thank the guides for two memorable and special walking tours. If you’re an interested resident, or you have visitors staying this summer, do look up one of their guided walking tours. They have the Mayor’s approval!”
All tours leave from Winchester Visitor Information Centre. Please check the Winchester Tourist Guides’ website for full details, prices and tour times. Tickets can be booked in advance via www.winchestertouristguides.com and can be bought on the day from the Winchester Visitor Information Centre at Winchester Guildhall, The Broadway, 01962 840500.
