Petition to Ban Loudspeaker Use in Tourist Guiding

The Institute of Tourist Guiding is campaigning against one of the worst symptoms of overtourism: the incessant use of loudspeakers in tourist guiding. Please sign our petition to end this practice.
Megaphone

The amplified din of non-Institute trained guides shouting into megaphones is a public nuisance that disrupts residents, devalues the experience for visitors, and shatters the peace of our public spaces.

The Institute is campaigning for a ban on these devices in our villages, towns and cities, demanding a return to considerate, human-scale guiding, exemplified by our Blue, Green and White badge members, and the use of readily-available technology that avoids utilising loudspeakers altogether. Join us in our fight to reclaim our cities, towns and traditions from this entirely unnecessary, unprofessional and unwelcome noise pollution. It's time to silence the megaphones and restore respect, one tour at a time.

Tourist guides holding an Institute of Tourist Guiding qualification are skilled in navigating crowds, redirecting visitors to lesser-known gems, and managing groups to ensure safety and minimise impact on local communities. With in-depth local knowledge, they can disperse the tourist load and provide an authentic, respectful experience that benefits both visitors and the host community. They are the frontline ambassadors of responsible tourism, ensuring that our local communities and our heritage sites are respected.

We the undersigned call on local authorities and the tourism industry to end the use of loudspeakers and voice amplification devices in tourist guiding in England, Northern Ireland and Jersey.
