Dr Dominic Fontana, FRGS, FSA on “The Sinking of the Mary Rose”

King Henry VIII watched as the Mary Rose, pride of his Navy suddenly capsized and sank whilst engaging a large French invasion fleet in the Solent on 19 July 1545. Dr. Fontana demonstrates through Tudor art, geography, history and architecture how and why this disaster happened.

Dr. Dominic Fontana has been involved with the Mary Rose project for over 35 years: he is a broadcaster and has even advised David Dimbleby for his series of films “Britain and the Sea” for BBC One. He formerly lectured at the University of Portsmouth, lives on the Isle of Wight and is a trustee of the Classic Boat Museum in Cowes.

Professor Glenn Richardson, Professor of Early Modern History St Mary’s University Twickenham on “The Field of Cloth of Gold”

This event in 1520 was an extraordinary international gathering of Renaissance rulers unparalleled in its opulence, pageantry, controversy and mystery. Henry VIII and Francis 1 of France agreed to meet, surrounded by virtually their entire political nations. Professor Richardson is the author of The Field of Cloth of Gold (2013), a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and is an Honorary Fellow of the Historical Association.
