Programme Content: There has been a training course for people wishing to become professional tourist guides in London for over 50 years.
The London Training programme prepares student guides for the Institute of Tourist Guiding examinations.
Students study and are assessed on the following: Background knowledge of the UK, in depth London knowledge, and regional knowledge which covers sites frequently visited from London in a day. Practical training and assessment take place in the National Gallery, the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, a City of London walk and a panoramic coach tour. Students are also required to write a 3000-word Tour Planning Project. Both the Project and the Background Knowledge paper are transferable qualifications, recognised in all the Institute of Tourist Guiding Level 4 regions.
On passing these written and practical examinations, the guide is awarded a Blue Badge, which is the industry's recognised symbol of professionalism in tourist guiding.
